With a long-standing passion for sustainability, the City of Reedley pursued Centrica Business Solutions to develop a solar project with no up-front costs through a Power Purchase Agreement.
The City of Reedley, located in California, is widely known as the "world's fruit basket," given its large concentration of acreage dedicated to growing fruit produce. The community's commitment to sustainability and environmentally responsible practices led them to select Centrica Business Solutions to install a solar photovoltaic system. Through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), the City advanced the project with no upfront costs, while Centrica Business Solutions aimed to help the City achieve its goals of locking in a fixed PPA rate to lower utility costs and reduce its carbon footprint. The project, which occurred between 2020 and 2022, encountered challenges with required environmental studies and material delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The final project resulted in a 1,026-kW ground-mount solar photovoltaic array with a Nextracker system on an undeveloped plot of land. While the team faced challenges with timelines, Centrica Business Solutions was still able to deliver on the completion date promised to the City of Reedley. Additionally, Centrica Business Solutions worked with the City to obtain alternate financing that lowered the City’s PPA rate from the original agreement by 1.46 cents per kWh, with no other changes made to the project.

Through the solar project, the City of Reedley is estimated to save $17,000 in year one, with estimated savings of $2.8 million over the 25-year term of the PPA. By promoting sustainable practices, the City of Reedley has achieved significant energy savings and demonstrated its commitment to building a greener future for generations to come.
