Supporting high-demand food production with on-site CHP at Moy Park

Moy Park, one of Europe’s leading poultry producers, partnered with Centrica Business Solutions to implement a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) solution at its Craigavon facility in Northern Ireland for improved resilience and cost management. This innovative system delivers electricity, hot water, and steam from a single fuel source, helping Moy Park improve energy efficiency, lower operating costs, and reduce carbon emissions.

The challenge:

Moy Park’s Craigavon site is a mature and growing facility with aging infrastructure and high energy demands for cooking and processing poultry products. Rising energy costs and corporate sustainability commitments required a solution that could deliver reliable power and heat, reduce carbon emissions, and improve overall efficiency without disrupting operations. The site also needed to address long-standing water supply challenges and ensure resilience during an extensive refurbishment project.

The solution:

Centrica Business Solutions worked closely with Moy Park to design and deliver a highly efficient CHP system tailored to the facility’s needs. The solution includes a CHP generator that produces electricity, hot water, and steam from natural gas, as well as a heat recovery system to maximize thermal energy use in cooking processes. To address water supply issues, the project also incorporated a 100,000-liter water tank. Centrica fully funded the project, allowing Moy Park to pay only for the energy it consumes.

The result:

The CHP system is expected to generate 18,300 MWh of energy annually, enough to power approximately 4,850 homes. Moy Park anticipates annual savings of more than $500,000 in operating costs and a reduction of 1,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to removing 350 cars from the road. With an efficiency rate of 80% compared to 30-40% for conventional power sources, the CHP solution strengthens Moy Park’s energy resilience, supports its carbon reduction goals, and demonstrates how food and beverage manufacturers can achieve significant cost and sustainability benefits through innovative energy strategies.
