Boston Scientific Supports Growing Energy Demands with CHP and Trigeneration

Boston Scientific partnered with Centrica Business Solutions to generate electricity, heat, and chilled water on-site while supporting the company’s cost-reduction objectives.

2.4 MW
total CHP capacity installed
15.9k
MWh annual electricity generation
12k
MWh annual heat utilization

The Challenge

As Boston Scientific’s manufacturing facility in Galway, Ireland expanded, the site required a solution capable of supporting the significant electricity, heating, and cooling demands.

The Solution

Centrica Business Solutions designed, installed, and commissioned a 1.2 MW combined heat and power (CHP) system utilizing an MTU generator set housed within a custom-built outdoor plant room.
Following the success of the initial installation, Centrica Business Solutions delivered a second 1.2 MW CHP system as part of a trigeneration solution. The expanded system combines CHP generation with an absorption chiller, enabling the facility to produce electricity, heat, and chilled water from a single integrated energy platform.

The Result

The CHP and trigeneration solution enables Boston Scientific’s facility to generate approximately 15,900 MWh of electricity annually while utilizing approximately 12,000 MWh of recovered heat. By producing electricity, heat and chilled water on-site, the system supports the facility’s ongoing operational requirements through a highly efficient integrated energy solution.
The project also delivers an estimated annual reduction of 1,850 metric tons of CO2e while supporting the facility’s electricity, heating, and cooling requirements.
