Saint-Gobain boosts energy efficiency and cuts CO2 emissions with turnkey CHP solution

The challenge:

Saint-Gobain is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. At its Termoli plant—covering 30,000 square meters and producing up to 24 million square meters of gypsum board annually—the company needed a solution to reduce CO₂ emissions, improve energy efficiency, and lower operating costs without disrupting production. The facility had already implemented sustainability initiatives, including ISO 14001 certification and smart
LED lighting, but sought a more impactful approach to meet long-term goals.
 

The solution:

Following a competitive tender, Saint-Gobain selected Centrica Business Solutions to design, build, finance, and manage a cogeneration system under a turnkey model. The CHP plant covers 78% of the site’s electricity needs and recovers thermal energy for reuse in gypsum board drying ovens.

The result: 

The CHP system delivers substantial benefits, including improved energy efficiency, reduced operating costs, and an annual CO₂ reduction of over 2,000 metric tons—the equivalent carbon absorption of 100,000 trees. Additionally, the project generates significant natural gas savings by reusing thermal energy, reinforcing Saint-Gobain’s commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality.
