Saint-Gobain, a global leader in sustainable construction materials, partnered with Centrica Business Solutions to implement a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system at its Termoli facility in Italy. This turnkey project supports the company’s ambitious carbon reduction goals and delivers significant energy efficiency improvements.
of electricity needs met by CHP
Saint-Gobain is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. At its Termoli plant—covering 30,000 square meters and producing up to 24 million square meters of gypsum board annually—the company needed a solution to reduce CO₂ emissions, improve energy efficiency, and lower operating costs without disrupting production. The facility had already implemented sustainability initiatives, including ISO 14001 certification and smartLED lighting, but sought a more impactful approach to meet long-term goals.
Following a competitive tender, Saint-Gobain selected Centrica Business Solutions to design, build, finance, and manage a cogeneration system under a turnkey model. The CHP plant covers 78% of the site’s electricity needs and recovers thermal energy for reuse in gypsum board drying ovens.
The CHP system delivers substantial benefits, including improved energy efficiency, reduced operating costs, and an annual CO₂ reduction of over 2,000 metric tons—the equivalent carbon absorption of 100,000 trees. Additionally, the project generates significant natural gas savings by reusing thermal energy, reinforcing Saint-Gobain’s commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality.
We chose Centrica Business Solutions because they demonstrated great flexibility and operational speed, but were also willing to engage with our processes and share the project risks with us. Gaetano Terrasini, CEO of Saint-Gobain Italy
