The Challenge

Like many public‑sector organizations, Albany County is balancing rising energy costs with the need to manage capital responsibly and deliver long‑term value for taxpayers. At the same time, the MVP Arena serves as the County’s premier concert and event venue, where reliable operations and predictable costs are critical to supporting demanding event schedules.
The Arena’s parking garage offered a unique opportunity to address these priorities, but only with a solution that could integrate into an existing structure, minimize upfront costs, and deliver reliable savings over time - without adding administrative burden or disrupting
day-to-day operations.

The Solution

Centrica Business Solutions delivered a turnkey solar PV and EV charging solution designed to maximize lifecycle value within the Arena’s existing footprint. By converting underutilized space atop the parking garage into a productive energy asset, Albany County advanced its energy strategy without impacting event operations or requiring additional land.
The project includes a 1.06 MW DC solar carport canopy, using high‑efficiency modules to generate on‑site electricity and reduce dependence on grid power, while integrating structural efficiency, LED lighting, weather‑management features, and compliance with New York State building codes and Domestic Content requirements.
Centrica also implemented a flexible EV charging network that supports the County’s fleet needs while expanding public charging access. Built with additional electrical capacity and infrastructure, the system allows future expansion without major reinvestment.
By navigating available rebates, grants, and tax credits, Centrica helped optimize project economics and reduce upfront and long‑term costs. Ongoing operations, maintenance, and software services ensure predictable performance and cost control throughout the project life.

The Result

The MVP Arena project delivers immediate and long‑term financial benefits while improving functionality and resilience of a critical public facility. The solar PV system offsets utility purchases, contributing to estimated annual cost savings of more than $168,000 and projected net benefits exceeding $3.2 million over 30 years, even after operations and maintenance.
By leveraging available incentives, Albany County was able to modernize its infrastructure while maintaining fiscal discipline. The addition of EV charging reduces fleet fuel costs, supports future transportation needs, increases the overall utility of the parking garage, and contributes to meaningful emissions reductions.
