How Centrica Business Solutions is shaping a low carbon future

James Rushen, Group Head of Environment at Centrica, explores how we’ve been playing our part in shaping a low carbon future, by using energy more sustainably in our own business.

At Centrica Business Solutions, we’re proud to partner with customers around the world to help them become a sustainable business and transition to a low carbon future in the most sustainable way. In 2019, Centrica introduced its Responsible Business Ambitions, with commitments out to 2030 to reduce our customers’ emissions in line with the Paris agreement and to enable the decarbonization of energy systems through flexible, distributed and low carbon technology. But as a group, we also recognize that we have an important role to play in reducing our own emissions and have committed to be net zero by 2050.

Over recent years, we’ve moved from being an asset-based business to a customer-focused services and solutions provider. Combined with the adoption of technology, innovation and cultural change, we now emit over 80% less carbon than we did a decade ago. We know there’s more work to do, and we will continue to drive efficiencies within our business, with the aim of reducing our internal carbon footprint by a further 35% by 2025 and developing our path to net zero emissions by 2050.

In this video, James Rushen, Group Head of Environment at Centrica, explores the steps we have taken globally to reduce our carbon emissions, and use energy more sustainably.

Through our Responsible Business Ambitions, we're accelerating the positive impact we have in society and on the environment – by helping to tackle climate change, building a more inclusive and skilled workforce, innovating to help make our customers’ lives easier and helping to make communities stronger.

Driving emissions out of our own fleet

As part of the introduction of Centrica’s Responsible Business Climate Ambitions, we have committed to reduce our internal carbon footprint by 35% by 2025 and transition our fleet to electric vehicles by 2030. With a fleet of over 12,000 vehicles globally and British Gas having the third largest commercial fleet in the UK, these efforts will make a material difference in decarbonizing emissions from travel.
