Construction of a new battery storage facility

Work is set to start next month on the construction of one of the world’s largest battery storage facilities at the site of the former Roosecote power station in Barrow.

Construction of the 49MW facility was confirmed in December 2016 as part of a £180m investment programme into new flexible power plants across the country.

Once complete, the facility will be capable of responding to fluctuations in demand in under a second, holding enough power to meet the needs of around 50,000 homes.

Mark Futyan, Merchant Power Director of Centrica’s Distributed Energy & Power business said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be in a position to start breathing life back into the old Roosecote site.

“This is a great opportunity for the region to be at the forefront of a new era for the energy industry as we bring in the very best in terms of state-of-the-art battery technology to help ensure stability of supply for local homes and businesses.”

Working alongside their contractors Younicos and Morrison Utility Services, the company will be hosting a ‘Meet the Buyer’ event at the Phoenix Business Centre between 2pm and 5pm on Monday 27th February, and is inviting businesses to register their interest in the supply of the following:

  • Major civil works
  • Electrical building services installation
  • Mechanical installation
  • Building construction to include steel erection and cladding
  • Haulage
  • Aggregate and concrete supplies
  • Security guarding and fencing
  • Hotels and catering
  • Cleaning

Work will start on site in early March and is expected to take around 20 months, entering operation in winter 2018.
