MALTA, NY – Centrica Business Solutions has been recognized by the National Association of Energy Service Companies (NAESCO) for its exceptional performance implementing sustainable and resilient energy upgrades for the National Park Service at Death Valley National Park, one of the harshest environments on earth.
Delivered through a Utility Energy Service Contract (UESC) with Southern California Edison (SCE), the project included installation of 336 kW of rooftop solar PV and replacement of 945 Dark-Sky-compliant LED fixtures across multiple park facilities. These upgrades provide substantial energy savings and emissions reductions while enhancing reliability for park operations and visitors.
The project’s engineering and installation were tailored to endure record-breaking heat, thermal cycling, and extreme weather events – including the use of high-temperature-resistant materials, specialized mounting systems, and heat-tested LED drivers designed for continuous operation in conditions exceeding 130°F. Each lighting fixture was specified to meet International Dark Sky Association (IDA) standards, minimizing glare and light pollution while maintaining visibility and safety in one of the world’s most unique natural environments.
Centrica’s design team also conducted a microgrid feasibility study to support future integration of battery energy storage, positioning the park to further increase resilience against outages and severe weather.
“This project was delivered under some of the harshest conditions imaginable, and it’s truly a testament to the creativity, resilience, and dedication of our team,” said Matt Sorbero, Head of North America, Centrica Business Solutions. “We’re honored to be recognized by NAESCO and grateful to our partners at SCE, Linmore LED, and Walter’s Wholesale Electric Co., as well as the team at Death Valley National Park for their collaboration and commitment.”
The project underscores Centrica’s growing portfolio of federal and public-sector energy solutions, supporting critical infrastructure through decarbonization and resilience investments. The company’s previous NAESCO recognition in 2023 honored its historic courthouse restoration for Coles County, Illinois, and this year’s award continues that legacy – demonstrating Centrica’s expertise in executing projects across diverse and challenging environments.
