How Centrica Business Solutions will decarbonise and reach net zero

James Rushen, Group Head of Environment at Centrica, shares our plans for reducing carbon emissions across our own operations, alongside his recommendations for other organisations progressing their sustainability journey.

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges the world faces today – and we believe that the energy sector is at the forefront of the need to respond in creating a cleaner, greener world.

We want to enable a cleaner energy system that supports renewables, reduces reliance on fossil fuels, and enhances grid flexibility. We’re focused on helping our customers to reduce their carbon emissions in line with the Paris Accord. As a group, we’re also working to decarbonise our own operations, and we have made a commitment to be net zero by 2050, as part of our Responsible Business Ambitions.

In this video, James Rushen, Group Head of Environment at Centrica, discusses our future goals for reducing carbon emissions. He discusses how we have agreed our long-term decarbonisation targets, and how we ensure these are underpinned by near-term goals that gain and maintain ongoing leadership support. James explores how we’re focused on driving efficiencies across three core areas – technology, innovation and culture. Finally, he shares the recommendations that he would give to other organisations who are beginning or progressing their own sustainability story.

We’re tackling some of the most challenging issues facing society through our Responsible Business Ambitions - helping to tackle climate change, build a more inclusive and skilled workforce, innovate to help make our customers’ lives easier and make communities stronger.

Driving emissions out of our own fleet

As part of the introduction of Centrica’s Responsible Business Climate Ambitions, we have committed to reduce our internal carbon footprint by 35% by 2025 and transition our fleet to electric vehicles by 2030. With a fleet of over 12,000 vehicles globally and British Gas having the third largest commercial fleet in the UK, these efforts will make a material difference in decarbonising emissions from travel.
