Solar power is expected to shine bright in Illinois

Solar power is expected to shine bright in Illinois

A highly anticipated incentive launching in late 2018 is expected to rank Illinois in the top 5 states for C&I solar.

If you own a business in Illinois, relief from unpredictable energy prices and supplies is on the horizon. Solar power from Centrica Business Solutions has been added to our suite of product offerings to help businesses in Illinois harness a renewable resource to power their business. A solar system installed onsite generates clean energy that can help lower operating costs, reduce reliance on the grid, and meet sustainability efforts.

An aggressive growth in solar is expected

Illinois is a growing solar market that has, to date, benefited from a strong renewable portfolio standard requiring that the state generate 25% of their energy from renewable sources by 2025. This means that the state is dedicated to making renewable sources of energy like solar power an integral part of its clean energy plan.

Going solar isn’t just a smart business decision. It’s about to catapult the state into becoming a national solar leader.

The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and GTM Research ranked Illinois 25th for installed solar capacity in the US during 2017, but the market is set to boom over the next 5 years. In fact, projections from the U.S. Solar Market Insight Report for Q2 2018 by GTM Research show that Illinois expects to add about 750 MW of installed commercial and industrial (C&I) solar from 2019–2023, ranking it in the top 5 states for C&I solar.

What is the reason for this anticipated growth in the Illinois solar market?

This expected boom in the Illinois solar market is the result of the highly anticipated rollout of a new incentive program later in 2018 by the Illinois Power Agency’s Long-Term Renewable Resource Procurement Plan—the Adjustable Block Program.

While details of the incentive program are still being hashed out by the state, this incentive will likely be a tiered program with fixed Solar Renewable Energy Credit (SREC) prices, with a progression from one price level to another based on market response.

It will be important to act early to secure a spot in an earlier block to receive the best incentive. Centrica Business Solutions is proud to bring its extensive experience and competitive solar offering to businesses in Illinois.
