The practical steps to reduce carbon emissions for your business

James Rushen, Group Head of Environment at Centrica, explores the practical steps that we have taken to reduce our carbon emissions, and the challenges we have faced along the way.

When our Responsible Business Ambitions were introduced in 2019, Centrica made a commitment to help shape a low carbon future, by enabling our customers, the energy system and our business to manage energy more sustainably. Reducing our own emissions in line with the Paris Agreement is a key part of this, and we have committed to be net zero by 2050.

In order to meet our carbon reduction goals, we have taken a wide range of steps to decarbonize our operations and become a more sustainable business. From investing in low-carbon innovations and technologies across our property portfolio, to transitioning our commercial fleet to electric vehicles, the steps we have taken to date has enabled us to reduce our internal carbon footprint by 39% since 2015. While our sustainability journey hasn’t been without its challenges, we’re proud of the progress we have made to date, and we’re confident that we are set on the right trajectory to meet our net zero targets.

In this video, James Rushen, Group Head of Environment at Centrica, discusses the practical steps that we have taken to decarbonize our business. He shares the key areas that we have focused on to date, in order to become a more sustainable business. He also explores the challenges we’ve faced along the way, and the steps we have taken to overcome them.

Through our Responsible Business Ambitions, we're accelerating the positive impact we have in society and on the environment – by helping to tackle climate change, building a more inclusive and skilled workforce, innovating to help make our customers’ lives easier and helping to make communities stronger.

Driving emissions out of our own fleet

As part of the introduction of Centrica’s Responsible Business Climate Ambitions, we have committed to reduce our internal carbon footprint by 35% by 2025 and transition our fleet to electric vehicles by 2030.

With a fleet of over 12,000 vehicles globally and British Gas having the third largest commercial fleet in the UK, these efforts will make a material difference in decarbonizing emissions from travel.
