At Centrica Business Solutions, we want to shape a lower carbon future by enabling our customers and our business to use energy smarter and more sustainably. Tackling climate change is one of the most important issue facing our society and as a leading provider of energy for homes and organisations, we take our role seriously.
Centrica plc embarked on a journey in 2007 to cut the internal carbon footprint of its property, fleet and travel by 20% by 2015. We exceeded this target, achieving a 27% reduction. In 2015 we committed to further reductions of 20% by 2025 against existing levels - surpassing this target only four years later in 2018 – and leading to the creation of ambitions the following year to reduce our internal carbon footprint and customer emissions in line with Paris goals out to 2030.
As the need to accelerate our journey to net zero grows, Centrica has once again responded by amplifying action as part of its People & Planet Plan – setting targets to help our customers be net zero by 2050 (28% reduction by 2030) while becoming a net zero business ourselves by 2045 (40% reduction by 2034) - five years earlier than its previous goal and the UK deadline.

Today, Centrica has reduced its total carbon emissions by 18% since 2019.
We've achieved this via property efficiencies, employee behavioural changes, utilising technologies such as LED lighting, on-site solar, energy optimisation and battery storage - alongside a move away from upstream generation and production.
The roll-out of our electric vehicle fleet is significantly reducing our internal carbon footprint; and we're exploring innovative ways to help customers achieve net zero by partnering to build the world’s first net zero industrial cluster in the UK using hydrogen, carbon capture, and storage technology.
Leading the energy transition
Our ambitious new goals for Centrica aim to reduce our own carbon footprint 40% by 2034 and ultimately reach net zero by 2045. And by 2050, we want to help our customers reach net zero too.
As a market leader in energy solutions, Centrica is well placed to achieve these ambitions by utilising its capabilities to embed sustainable technologies and behaviours across our business and for our customers.
Powering homes and businesses
We want to help our customers live more sustainably as we all work towards a low carbon future. In the last decade the UK power grid has decarbonised rapidly with more renewables generating electricity.
Which is why we are proud that in over the last 2 years every unit of electricity provided to UK homes and businesses was from zero carbon sources; 24% nuclear and a huge 76% from sources like wind and solar.
Switching 12,000 vehicles to electric
We ordered a 1,000 e-Vivaro electric vans from Vauxhall in 2020, with an additional 2,000 ordered already in 2021 – meaning that by the end of 2022 at least 25% of our fleet will be fully electric.
We've installed nearly 17,700 electric vehicle charge points across the UK since 2013, joined forces with vehicle manufacturers and piloted low carbon initiatives, such as installing GPS and ‘right sizing’ vehicles.
Taking our responsibilities seriously
In 2020, the CDP again rated Centrica an ‘A’ for leadership in action and disclosure on climate change in recognition of our business' efforts to bring transparency to decarbonising the energy sector.
In addition, we have expanded our collaboration with organisations in search of greater sustainability both through our partnerships and working with our customers to support their road to net zero.

By supporting both people and planet, Centrica will help build a more inclusive and sustainable future for communities, our planet and each other.
Which is why we want to build a workforce that reflects the full diversity of its communities, recruit at least 3,500 apprentices and provide career-development opportunities for under-represented groups, as well as inspire colleagues to give 100,000 days to build inclusive communities.
